# Reef Deep Current - November 2025 Update > Where we are, and what's next for Reef Chain **Published by:** [Reef Chain News](https://blog.reef.io/) **Published on:** 2025-11-18 **Categories:** reef, chain, blockchain, layer1, layerone, polkadot, substrate, sdk, polkadotsdk, upgrade, update, pallet, pallets **URL:** https://blog.reef.io/reef-deep-current-november-2025-update ## Content Reef Chain’s massive blockchain upgrade is underway. Today, we’d like to give you an update as to where we’re at and where we’re going now. First, Antier Solutions worked on an upgrade path to move from Polkadot SDK (formerly known as Substrate) v0.9.10 to v0.9.43. This is a major upgrade that requires an entirely new binary to be run by validators and anyone else running a Reef node. We will then be moving from Polkadot SDK v0.9.43 to v.1.1.0, which also requires a new binary. After this, Reef can be easily upgraded as originally designed via upgrade commands that nodes receive and perform seamlessly. Looking to the future, our focus will be on coordinating with key Reef Chain groups, including: Reef ValidatorsRPC providersData providers (e.g. SQD)Other infrastructure providers (e.g. Subscan)This upgrade pushes Reef dramatically forward by::Offering compatibility with popular wallet apps like MetaMask, Zerion, Rainbow and Trust Wallet. Removing the need for users to manually bind EVM addresses to their Reef native wallet address, a major source of friction right now.More compatibility for developer tools like Hardhat, Remix, Truffle and others with Reef out of the box. Deep Current Upgrade PathOur goal right now is to perform one upgrade at a time. To do this, we will be actively working with the groups above to set timelines for updates, including testing. Validators will be on standby to disable the old binary and begin running the new one. This method allows for a single upgrade to happen smoothly before performing the next one. Currently, we’re waiting for the next stable release of Polkadot SDK, due 18 December 2025. Once this is released, we will check it against Reef Chain to ensure compatibility. Prior to the upgrade happening, we must ensure the updated code supports the following:Full Ethereum RPC compatibilityAll relevant smart contract types/methodsStorage migrationOther standards builders have told us they needAll that said, we’re confident we will be able to make the upgrade happen in Q1 2026, and that will coincide with the $REEF bridge closing just prior to the upgrade occurring.
