Reef's Community Developer Fund Issues Retroactive Grant to Mr.Dapps for Reef Name Service Development

Taking steps to make blockchain technology easier to learn and use.

Reef's Community Developer Fund is pleased to announce a retroactive grant of US$3,000 to Mr.Dapps in recognition of their work on developing the Reef Name Service (RNS). This grant also signifies a commitment from Mr.Dapps to continue enhancing and expanding RNS on the Reef Chain blockchain.

Reef Name Service: Simplifying Blockchain Interaction

Mr.Dapps' Reef Name Service is an exclusive name service on the Reef Chain blockchain that translates complex wallet addresses into human-readable names. This innovative service aims to make blockchain interactions more accessible and user-friendly for both the general public and Web3 enthusiasts.

By allowing users to send tokens to easy-to-remember domain names (e.g., johnsmith.reef) instead of lengthy wallet addresses, RNS significantly improves the user experience on Reef Chain, and helps improve security as users don’t need to focus on double and triple-checking receiving wallet addresses. This simplification of blockchain transactions is a crucial step towards mainstream adoption of decentralized technologies.

Think of this scenario like having to remember someone’s email address instead of their wallet address. You type something like “joana.wallet.reef” and the app automatically translates that to the underlying wallet address. You don’t need to scan Joana's QR code, and she doesn’t need to send you his wallet address for you to copy and paste it. The RNS is much easier to remember and helps negate usability and security problems for everyone.

Roadmap and Collaboration: The Future of RNS

As part of the ongoing collaboration between Reef and Mr.Dapps, several exciting developments are in the pipeline for Reef Name Service:

  • Subdomain Integration: Mr.Dapps will develop the ability to use RNS domains with subdomains (e.g., iamcool.johnsmith.reef). Reef will acquire up to three domains for this purpose, and these RNS subdomains will be offered to users without an existing RNS domain via Reef Chain Wallet and Reef's browser extension.

  • Free Subdomain Subsidization: Reef will subsidize RNS subdomains to make them free for users to generate for each wallet that doesn't already have an RNS bound to it. This removes barriers to RNS adoption, and gives users more freedom to choose what their Reef Chain experience looks like.

  • Cross-Product Support: Reef and Mr.Dapps will work together to add support for RNS across all internally Reef-built products and encourage other dApp and wallet builders to support it. This will involve creating and sharing documentation and potentially pre-built libraries to streamline integration.

  • Revenue Sharing: For purchased RNS domains (e.g., mariahernandez.reef), Reef will receive a small portion of the revenue, which will be used to further bolster the Reef ecosystem.

The short-term RNS roadmap includes adding support for RNS to Reef Chain Wallet by integrating RNS smart contract function calls in the JavaScript implementation of the mobile app, an an input field will be added to resolve .reef domains to users' EVM addresses during token sending.

Furthermore, RNS support will be added to Sqwid, ReefSwap, and ReefScan, with ongoing support for other Reef ecosystem developers to integrate RNS into their dApps, protocols, and wallets. Mr.Dapps will continue to build additional features that enhance RNS' functionality and usefulness, such as free transfer of RNS domains to other wallets.

The partnership between Reef Chain and Mr.Dapps represents a significant step forward in making blockchain technology more accessible and user-friendly. By bringing the Reef Name Service to more people and enhancing the user experience on Reef Chain, this collaboration aims to set a new standard for ease of use in the blockchain space.
